Lovable vs Bolt vs Cursor for beginners: free plans and usage compared

Last updated

Every fact about plans and prices on this page comes from the official pricing pages of Lovable, Bolt and Cursor, and from Cursor’s pricing docs, checked on October 14, 2026. Plans change often, so check those pages before you pay for anything. None of the links on this page are affiliate links.

Which one should a beginner pick?

If you’ve never written code, start with Lovable or Bolt. Both build the app from a conversation with the AI, and both ask for less technical comfort than Cursor.

Cursor is a code editor. It makes more sense once you’re comfortable looking at code, or when someone who codes is working with you.

Between Lovable and Bolt, for a first app, the difference matters less than finishing. The first app in 30 minutes guide works with either one.

Still unsure? The tool picker quiz asks seven questions and also covers v0 and Replit, and the monthly cost calculator puts the plan prices side by side.

What does each free plan give you?

  • Lovable: it’s free to start. You get 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, plus 20 Cloud credits a month and 4 credits for AI features in the apps you build. Lovable credits explained goes through how credits work.
  • Bolt: a daily limit of 300K tokens and 1M tokens a month, with Bolt branding, uploads up to 10MB, hosting and unlimited databases.
  • Cursor: the Hobby plan is free, with limited usage.

How does each tool count usage?

The three tools measure usage in different ways, so their numbers can’t be compared directly.

  • Lovable counts credits per message. In Default Mode, the cost depends on how complex the task is. Lovable’s own examples go from 0.50 credits for “Make the button gray” to 1.70 for “Build me a landing page, use images”. In Plan Mode, each message costs 1 credit.
  • Bolt counts tokens. Most of the usage comes from syncing your project files to the AI, so the same request costs more tokens as the project grows.
  • Cursor’s paid plans include usage that resets with each monthly billing cycle. The model you choose affects how fast you use it up, and third-party models are charged at the model’s API price.

Whatever you pick, the habits that save usage are the same: write the whole request before sending it, ask for one change at a time and stop after two or three failed attempts. The common errors section has a “How not to burn credits” part on every page.
